Giving HIV a Poor Reception: New AIDS Treatment Tinkers with Immune Cell Genes
An article written by Bob Roehr titled, “Giving HIV a Poor Reception: New AIDS Treatment Tinkers with Immune Cell Genes” shows hope for a possible cure for the HIV virus in the future. HIV has long been perceived as an incurable disease that has killed millions of people throughout the course of history. However, scientists have started to learn how HIV enters the body and from that they are now trying to block the entry site to prevent HIV from taking over.
HIV enters cells in the body by attaching to a special region on a cell called a receptor molecule; in this case the receptor is called CD4. Then the virus attaches itself to a co-receptor molecule called CCR5. Scientists then discovered a mutation to the gene that encodes for CCR5. A mutation is a permanent change in the sequence of DNA in a gene. The mutation (called delta-32) prevents CCR5 from being created. With this said, if an individual inherits only one copy of this gene then they have a less likely chance of contracting HIV and if they do, the disease will play out much slower since they will have fewer CCR5 receptors for the virus to attach to. An individual who inherits the mutant gene from both parents will not have any CCR5 receptors which make it close to impossible for HIV to enter the cell.
When all of this was realized, pharmaceutical companies sought out a way to chemically block the CCR5 receptor thus artificially blocking HIV from entering the cell. With this new insight came the production of a small molecule drug called maraviroc.
I chose this article because before I read this article I only thought that HIV entered the body based on what my teachers told me in health class. Their explanation was that it is spread and enters the body through bodily fluids. I never thought about it past that point at a cellular and molecular level. This article enlightened me and has helped me understand how it enters the body on those levels and I found it extremely fascinating. The thought about a potential cure for the HIV virus will be one of the biggest breakthroughs in medical and genetic history.

Do you know how long Maraviroc has been on the market? I'm asking because I'd like to know if there's any data on the long-term effects of blocking the CCR5 receptor. Also, what does the receptor do? That is to say, what is its normal function? I’m guessing that its function is not readily apparent, because you said that there are people without the receptor (“An individual who inherits the mutant gene from both parents will not have any CCR5 receptors which make it close to impossible for HIV to enter the cell.”). And if these people had any condition related to their lack of the CCR5 receptor, then I’m sure researchers would not have tried to develop a drug that would block the receptor.

I found this blog to be very interesting. I too just like you thought of HIV as solely being passed bodily fluid to bodily fluid. I also thought that if I ever contacted HIV it would automatically go to my children. I think the fact that there might be some sort of mutation to prevent it from being passed to offspring is very interesting and also appealing to the population as HIV remains a scary situation.

I've always been taught the same thing about the spreading of HIV - it was spread through bodily fluids. I never knew that there were genetic factors that made a person more likely to contract HIV. Finding out if you have this gene or not would be a good idea, so that you know what your risk of contracting HIV is. The fact that people have developed a drug that can block the receptor site is a great advancement in trying to stop the spread of this disease.

ReplyDeleteIn chemistry class, we also learned that the same mutation, Delta-32, can affect resistancy to the Black Plague, which is a bacteria-not a virus like HIV. When studying it's affect on the plague, one source stated that the gene was primarily found in people of European descent. Did this study mention that at all? Did it mention any other correlations between ethnicities, etc? Also, is the gene dominant or recessive? It would be interesting to find out how the gene is affected by the mixing of races and it's prevalence in today's population.

I found this to be very interesting. I would like to read the original article. I had no idea there was a drug to help prevent HIV. I wonder why this is not common knowledge. I did not know certain people were more likely than other to get the disease. I think this knowledge should also be taught when people are telling you about HIV.
